Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), the country’s leading total beverage business and partners through its flagship community investment programme, Water of Life (WoL), has commissioned an ultra-modern water facility at Nsawam, which forms part of the company’s ambition to build thriving communities in areas where it operates. The facility, which can produce about 24,000 liters of water a day, was funded by GGBL and the Jaldhaara Foundation at a cost of $100,000. It will provide access to sustainable clean drinking water to an estimated 10,000 beneficiaries within Nsawam and adjoining communities, who in recent times have experienced acute water shortages. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony to unveil the facility, Gavin Pike, Managing Director for GGBL said sustainable access to clean drinking water and sanitation is the bedrock for building strong and thriving communities. It is prerequisite to the realization of the socio-economic well-being of every community. “For us, we continue to lead the way in providing water to communities where we operate. In the last few years, we made a commitment to refocus our investments to communities where we source local raw materials for production. One of such areas is Nsawam, which has had to deal with acute water shortage during the dry season”, he said. He noted that water is an important resource for GGBL as a total beverage business; adding “The volumes produced from our sites is produced with water sourced from some water stressed areas. Therefore, replenishing water in these areas, remains a top business priority.” He further urged the community to ensure the facility is safeguarded to better serve the people of Nsawam and its environs for years to come. Gabriel Opoku Asare, Corporate Relations Director for Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, noted that GGBL acknowledges the role water plays in developing communities and works assiduously to replenish water it takes from the society. “Our strategic approach to water stewardship set out in our Water Blueprint, ensures we invest in communities by building projects that are community owned and capable of becoming self-sufficient. Since 2007, we have made significant contributions to over 70 communities across Ghana, with over 600,000 people in water stressed areas benefiting from these projects”, he remarked. Mr. Joseph Obeng Poku, who represented the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, commended Guinness Ghana and partners for the project and disclosed that government is ready to partner the private sector especially in areas involving water and sanitation, in order to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The commissioning ceremony was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr. Isaac Kwadwo Buabeng, Municipal Chief Executive of Nsawam, Mr. Seth Akwaboah, CEO of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Management of GGBL, Nana Okoanadwo Afutu-Dompre II the Chief of Nsawam, and relevant stakeholders, among others.
